Will 8th Pay Commission Double Your Salary? Check Projected Hikes Across Pay Grades
The 8th Pay Commission has been approved to revise salaries and pensions of over 1 crore central government employees and retirees. The revised pay structure is expected to be effective January 1, 2026.

8th Pay Commission Latest Update
8th Pay Commission Update: The Centre has approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission, which will revise the salaries and pensions of over 1 crore central government employees and pensioners. The revised pay structure is expected to come into effect from January 1, 2026. However, the delay in the formation of the commission has raised concerns among central government employees.
A key focus of the commission will be the “fitment factor” — the multiplier used to calculate the new pay scales. While the 7th Pay Commission had set this factor at 2.57, it is likely to be increased to 2.86 under the 8th Pay Commission.
A critical aspect of the upcoming changes is the proposed increase in the 'fitment factor' from 2.57 to 2.86. This adjustment could potentially raise the minimum basic salary from Rs 18,000 to approximately Rs 51,480, while the minimum pension may increase from Rs 9,000 to Rs 25,740. The final decisions will rest with the newly appointed members of the commission.
Impact on Allowances and Contributions
In addition to base salary adjustments, allowances such as House Rent Allowance (HRA) and Travel Allowance (TA) are also likely to see updates based on employee postings and travel requirements. Consequently, two employees at the same pay grade may have differing total earnings due to variations in their allowance entitlements.
Moreover, contributions to the National Pension System (NPS) and the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) will also be affected. Currently, government employees contribute 10% of their basic pay and Dearness Allowance (DA) to the NPS, with the government contributing 14%. Following the salary revisions, these contributions will increase accordingly. The subscription rates for CGHS are linked to salary slabs, thus, an increase in basic pay will result in a corresponding rise in CGHS charges.
Projected Salary Hikes Across Pay Grades
Preliminary estimates suggest notable salary hikes across various pay grades. For instance:
- Grade 2000 (Level 3): Basic salary could rise to Rs 57,456, with gross monthly pay reaching Rs 74,845 and net take-home pay around Rs 68,849.
- Grade 4200 (Level 6): Expected basic pay of Rs 93,708 may result in a gross salary of Rs 1,19,798, leading to a net monthly salary of about Rs 1,09,977.
- Grade 5400 (Level 9): The basic salary could increase to Rs 1,40,220, with a gross salary of Rs 1,81,073 and net take-home pay around Rs 1,66,401.
- Grade 6600 (Level 11): The revised basic salary might reach Rs 1,84,452, with a gross monthly income expected to be Rs 2,35,920, resulting in a take-home pay of approximately Rs 2,16,825.
The aforementioned figures are based on initial projections, and actual amounts may differ following the final recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission and subsequent government decisions.
As the 8th Pay Commission progresses, employees and retirees alike await further details on the implementation of these significant changes to their compensation structures. The commission's recommendations aim to align salaries and pensions with current economic conditions, ensuring that government employees receive fair remuneration for their services.
