Bengaluru Rain: Bengaluru has been experiencing on-and-off spells of rain over the past few days, throwing daily life into disarray. On Tuesday, several parts of the city received rainfall, ranging from light to heavy, causing waterlogging and traffic issues in many areas.
Meanwhile, an independent weather forecaster on X noted, “A fairly large thunderstorm cell is forming southwest of Bengaluru, near Bidadi,” hinting at more rain in the hours to come.
A sudden spell of heavy rain threw Bengaluru into disarray on Tuesday evening as well, flooding roads, halting traffic and disrupting flight services. Several parts of the city, including busy central districts and tech hubs like Electronics City, witnessed severe waterlogging as stormwater flooded low-lying areas.
The downpour, which began late in the evening, quickly overwhelmed Bengaluru’s drainage infrastructure. Areas such as Hennur in the north, and Richmond Town, BTM Layout, Sarjapur and Electronics City in the central and southern parts of the city, saw streets submerged in rainwater. Vehicles were left stranded, and commuters had to wade through knee-deep water in some places.
The chaos was captured across social media platforms, with residents posting visuals of vehicles stuck in flooded roads and traffic moving at a snail’s pace.
Flight Operations Hit, Six Flights Diverted to Chennai
The rain didn’t just affect the roads — the skies were no better. Poor visibility and soggy runway conditions at Kempegowda International Airport forced authorities to divert six flights late Tuesday night. According to a report in DT Next, this included international flights such as an IndiGo service from Kuala Lumpur and a Thai Airways flight from Bangkok.
All six flights were safely rerouted to Chennai, where they landed around midnight. Airport officials said flight operations in Bengaluru are expected to return to normal once weather conditions improve.
Weather Outlook: More Rain on the Horizon
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the southwest monsoon is currently active over Interior Karnataka, although it remains weak along the coastal regions. Despite this, rain activity has been reported in several districts across the state.
The IMD has issued a weather alert for Wednesday, forecasting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in parts of Ballari, Bengaluru Urban and Rural, Chitradurga, Chikkaballapura, Mandya, Ramanagara, Tumakuru and Kolar. Wind speeds may reach up to 40–50 kmph in some areas, potentially worsening local conditions.
Moderate showers are also expected in Chamarajanagar, Mysuru, Davangere, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu and Vijayanagar.
City authorities are keeping a close watch on flood-prone areas and have advised residents to avoid non-essential travel. Emergency teams have been deployed to respond to flooding, and citizens are urged to follow updates from the IMD and local disaster management units.
